Singapore International of Arts Festival (SIFA) 2019 Presents A Dream Under the Southern Bough: Reverie
When your dream surpasses your periphery, can you hold it all together?
Toy Factory’s modern stage adaptation of Tang Xian Zu’s A Dream Under the Southern Bough is traditionally a Kun Opera. Now under the tutelage of Chief Artistic Director Goh Boon Teck, the incredulous 44-chapter journey will enter into the second instalment of a 3-part series.
Reverie will build on the success of its predecessor – The Beginning – and take on the first 22 chapters of Chun Yu Fen wondrous journey into the Ant Kingdom, where he is thrust into a love relationship and a political career that is well beyond his dreams.
The disgraced naval officer Chun Yu Fun goes on a fantastical journey into the Ant Kingdom after his entanglement with a guilty Monk, and in his drunken stupor under a giant Sophora tree, he begins his fantastical journey where an arranged marriage with the princess of the monarchical empire propels his life forward to unimaginable heights.
Chun Yu Fen then seals his status with the appointment to govern the vacant Southern Bough region. As love and career converges for him in a way that never happened in his real life, he begins to truly immerse into the rosy and all too perfect situation. Unbeknown to him, trouble is brewing and inching closer to him than he can ever imagine.
